CoffeeCaffeine withdrawal has taken medical community into an alarming concern as an estimated one out of eight people is experiencing symptoms that affects the individual’s ability to function or work for a couple of days. It was suggested by researchers in 2004 as a verifiable condition in the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). But caffeine withdrawal can be sometimes dangerous though it can make one uncomfortable for a few days.

The most common symptoms link to caffeine withdrawal is moderate to severe head pain. This may be experienced in the last 12 to 24 hours after last taking the caffeine. Normally, it would last only for 2 days though in some cases it goes longer than that. If you are determined to stop consuming caffeine, you try checking the labels for pain killers. There are medications that combine caffeine with ibuprofen and acetaminophen since it will enhance pain relief.

Other individuals who experienced caffeine withdrawal may feel depressed and others feel drowsy. Some may experience mood in stability which may be cured by medications prescribed by doctors. A person might also experience flu-like symptoms that include vomiting or nausea and stiffness or muscle pain. There are also possibilities that person will have difficulty concentrating on things.

After the last intake of caffeine, a person would be dealing with the caffeine withdrawal symptoms for about 2 to 9 days more. People may say that the symptoms of sleepiness will continue which might be more psychologically based if they will be using caffeine to start their day. But the body will no longer be addicted to caffeine 9 days after. Consult a doctor if you notice the symptoms continue s they might mean something else.

Hypoglycemia Diet

Posted in Healthy Diet on December 23rd, 2011 by Body Health – Be the first to comment

SalmonHypoglycemia is syndrome that results when the blood sugar in the body is low. A normal glucose level must be between 70-150mg. This will have varying symptoms depending on the person. The symptoms of hypoglycemia can be resolved when the person’s sugar level becomes normal again. This may occur throughout the life of a person or it can be linked to diabetes.  When a person suffers from this condition, he may have serious health problems. Hypoglycemia can be controlled by eating certain foods.

1. Protein

Protein foods take some time to be digested and this will provide energy to the body without fluctuations in the levels of blood sugar. A good hypoglycemia diet ideally includes lean proteins like chicken and fish.

2. Complex carbohydrates

Consuming complex carbohydrates like pasta, bread, potatoes and brown rice is helpful in keeping blood sugar stable as they don’t digest easily and will not cause any sudden rise in and drop of blood sugar.

3. High fiber foods

Consuming foods rich in fiber slows down digestion and aids in keeping the levels of blood sugar stable between meals. Select fruit alternatives that have no added legumes or sugar.

4. Dairy

People with hypoglycemia maintain the level of their blood sugar by taking low-fat diet.

The most ideal means to reduce symptoms of hypoglycemia is to follow a hypoglycemic diet. A person who is experiencing this condition must not take sugary foods and should not miss a meal because this will cause a decrease in the levels of blood sugar causing the symptoms to start. A personalized diet plan that will guarantee the stability of blood sugar levels will be best for the person. Some of the foods that must be avoided include candies, sweets and ice creams. It is also a good idea to avoid any form of soups and breads as they also have huge quantities of sugar.

Starch in the diet has been popular to immediately transform into blood glucose so this must be taken as much as a hypoglycemic person can. It is best to consume just carbs and starch alone without consuming any proteins and fats because they hamper digestion. The person will need 5 to 15 minutes to get back the level of his glucose to normal. The person should not overeat because of the possibility of a reverse effect of the foods on the condition.

If an individual is not conscious or is experiencing seizures and is not able to consume any food, glucose should be given intravenously or through a glucagon injection. Typically, this must be performed only when the patient is experiencing an extreme type of reactive hypoglycemia. Furthermore, starch can also be effectively provided to a person who is taking acrabose. An individual who is taking medications such as alpha-glucosidase inhibitors and acrabose will not easily break down starch in the body and often it is absorbed without effects. This person utilizes an alternative hypoglycemic diet that compromise juices, glucose tablets and honey to help them to get back to normal.

MeatTestosterone boosters are compounds which are normally prescribed by physicians to increase testosterone level for men. They are usually used in situations where the body fails to produce sufficient amount of male hormones for some reasons. In this case, the booster is used to correct a testosterone deficiency and retain the balance of the body. With this type of medication, the frequency of duration will be according to the underlying cause and the inability to produce normal testosterone levels. Most of the medication used is prescription-only treatments which are administered by a medical professional. However, herbal and vitamin based testosterone booster products are now emerging in the market today.

A cruciferous vegetable grown in Peru, Maca contains plant sterols which can block and control the production of estrogen and boost testosterone level. It would more effective if used daily consuming 3-6 tablespoon for the whole maca root powder, not the extracts nor the capsules. Zinc Citrate which can be a good investment leads out to increased testosterone production. Having high dosage of Vitamin E has also been connected to increase male hormones along with several other benefits. Transdermal magnesium is one great natural testosterone booster which is needed to be applied twice per day. For optimal results, it should be done in the morning and before sleeping. Using a highly tested omega 3 supplement is also another way to increase the level of testosterone in the body.

Your life style will also contribute to the improvement of testosterone level. Try getting 8-9 hours a day of sleep by getting off to bed by 10:30 to 11 every night. Eat enough healthy saturated foods like fats foods like grass beef and coconut oil. Give extra time to learn to minimize your stress level and avoid consuming processed food, non organic and factory farmed animal products. Avoid all whey protein which is not made from cows that feeds on the grass and was not able to undergo drug or chemical treatment to lower testosterone. If you are doing a work out, keep it short and intense. This kind of training will help the male hormone production after 45 minutes. Try to focus on dips, chins, pushups, squats, snatches and deadlifts. Do not do a medium to high intensity long duration cardio training. It is also advisable in most cases to have sex more often ideally three times per week.

Testosterone boosters are also used by individuals whose testosterone level decreases because of some type of sexual dysfunction. The application of the booster will enhance the testes, pituitary gland or other organs directly or indirectly related to the production of testosterone. The most responsible way of using a booster is under the guidance of a qualified medical professional. He can asses you in the current level of testosterone and design a way of using the booster which is appropriate for the type of treatment you need. Using boosters under the physicians care will make it easier for you to deal with any possible side effects which may develop because of too much testosterone in the body.

Best Muscle Building Foods

Posted in Healthy Diet on December 19th, 2011 by Body Health – Be the first to comment

EggsWhen it comes to foods that help in muscle-building, it is necessary to note that protein is essential in building muscle tissues. Protein has twenty amino acids including nine essential amino acids which must be obtained through a healthy diet. The rest of the amino acids are supplied by the body itself.

The best foods that are helpful in building muscles are those that have a well-balanced variety of essential and non-essential amino acids. The foods that have both these amino acids are known as complete proteins. The body can build muscles as it has amino acids. While the liver may produce non-essential amino acids, the body cannot supply the lacking amino acids. Essential amino acids can be produced through a balanced and healthy diet. When the body needs essential amino acids and it is not present, tissues will be broken down by the body to get them. To avoid this breakdown, it is imperative to consume a diet that is full of essential amino acids or foods for muscle building.

1. Egg Whites

These foods are among the purest forms of protein. This excellent muscle-building food has high biological value which means that a huge part of the protein absorbed from these foods is already used by the body for protein synthesis. Egg whites also have very few carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

2. Beans and legumes

If you seriously want to build muscles, beans and legumes are perfect sources. Usually, people refer to lean meats when it comes to muscle-building foods but they are not aware that beans and legumes are great sources of fiber and protein. Fiber is important to maintain a normal and regular healthy bowel movements and appropriate insulin response. These functions are important to muscle growth because they aid in absorption and utilize different supplements and nutrients that bodybuilders ingest.

3. Turkey/Chicken

To be able to pack on pounds of muscles, lean meats like turkey and chicken breasts must be staple in each diet of body builders. Apart from offering a great source of quality proteins, they are very low in trans and saturated fats. Because the fat count is very low, turkey and chicken can be combined into different meals for an amazing source of protein. These meat are also easily accessible that can be prepared in various ways providing the chance for different meal options.

4. Lean Red Meat

Cuts of red meat and lean ground beef are muscle-building foods that are rich in iron, protein, B vitamins and zinc. Red meats contain a high calorie in every serving ratio, making it a great option for hard gainers who are searching for pack on some size. But, as red meats have no higher saturated fats level, the must be eaten every day. Lean red meats are great when combined into a weekly diet of fish, turkey and chicken.

5. Fish

Even though it is essential to stay away from foods that are high in fat, fish is an exception to this. Fish has essential fatty acids like omega 3 which is helpful in supporting the process of building muscles. Cold water fish like tuna, salmon, sardines and trout are a great source of healthy fats and proteins.

What is Greek Yogurt?

Posted in Healthy Diet on December 9th, 2011 by Body Health – Be the first to comment

YoghurtGreek yogurt also known as strained yogurt, labneh or yogurt cheese is a type of yogurt that has been passed though a filter, paper bag or cloth in order to remove the whey or milk serum. Once this yogurt has been strained, it gives it an evenness that is different from cheese while still preserving the sour taste that is distinct in yoghurt. Greek yogurt is no different from other types of yogurt because it is made from milk that has been enriched by adding extra powder milk and butter fat as well as by boiling off water from the milk.

In most cases, Greek yogurt is made from sheep’s milk or from a constant mixture of sheep and goat’s milk. Nonetheless, Greek yogurt can still be made from cows mild especially for commercial purposes although it is not a preferred ingredient. Greek yogurt has become increasingly popular in Western Europe and United States due to its rich texture, thickness and low fat content. Strained yogurt is has more protein content and low sugar content due to straining thus makes it healthier than regular yoghurt.

Both Greek and ordinary yogurt are low in calories and full of calcium as well as bacterial cultures making them part of a healthy diet. Below are the key similarities and differences in Greek and ordinary yoghurt.

Protein content

Greek yogurt has higher protein content than regular yoghurt. This rich protein content helps in promoting fullness. An ordinary 6-ounce serving of Greek yogurt contains about 15 to 20 grams of protein, the same as that found in about 2 to 3 ounces of lean meat. This has increased the appeal of Greek yogurt among vegetarians because they sometimes find it hard to obtain enough proteins.  A 6-ounce serving of regular yogurt contains approximately 9 grams, which means that you feel hungry more quickly than if you take Greek yoghurt.

Carbohydrates

Greek yogurt is an excellent choice for low-carbdieters because it contains about half the amount of carbohydrates as that found in regular yogurt i.e. regular yogurt has 13 to 17 grams of carbohydrates while Greek yogurt has 5 to 8 grams. In addition, strained yogurt has less milk sugar making hence very unlikely to cause lactose intolerance. However, sweetening can increase the amount of carbohydrates in both yoghurts.

Fat

Greek yogurt contains about 16 grams of saturated fat in a 7-ounce serving while regular yogurt contains about 5 grams in an 8-ounce serving. This means that you are more heart disease by taking Greek yogurt than by taking regular yoghurt. Therefore, if you prefer Greek to regular yogurt make sure you choose fat free or low fat versions.

Sodium and calcium

The amount of sodium in Greek yogurt is about half that in ordinary yoghurt. This is not bad considering that high salt content increases the risk of heart problems and hypertension. Through the straining process, Greek yogurt loses a proportion of its calcium, but the remaining amount is still within the recommended amounts. Although a majority of experts advocate for Greek yoghurt, the truth is that they both have a nutritional value.

How to Build Up Your Immune System?

Posted in Exercises, Healthy Diet on December 8th, 2011 by Body Health – Be the first to comment

DumbbellsThe human body is a remarkable machine with its constituents and make up being ingenious. The immune system for instance, is built in such a way that if there is a foreign body that finds its way into the body, it will take up its role to ensure that the foreign substance is eliminated before it can do any damage. This however, is the ideal situation, since there are many instances where the immune system is unable to effectively perform this function.

How an individual takes care of their body, will determine how well the body as well as build up their immune system will serve them. For example, if an individual is always stressed, never exercise, they hardly take in a balanced diet, and furthermore expose themselves to harsh environmental factors, their immune system is likely to fail, and they will most probably fall ill or even die. An individual who takes little care of their health is likely to become sickly quite easily, and recovery from the illness will take a longer time.

There are practices, however, that a person can engage in that will ensure that a person acquires a strong immune system will improve even without the use of medication.

What a person should do includes:

  • Drinking a lot of water – Water allows the body to eliminate toxins and at the same time makes it possible for the body to transport useful ingredients to various parts. Water is required for all the chemical reactions that take place in the body and enhances lubrication in the various parts of the body which involve a lot of movement.
  • Exercise – The human body requires a lot of exercise in order to function properly. Some of the advantages of being fit include the ability of the individual to have a quick recovery if they were sick and more so to put the immune system in the proper shape to fight diseases.
  • Enough rest – An individual requires having plenty of rest and avoiding a lot of stress. Resting does not mean that an individual should be lazy; it is a way of giving the body an opportunity to regain its freshness as well as to recharge. Extreme exhaustion, trauma and panic, are signs of an individual who does not take the time to rest effectively. Enough rest is essential since it also enhances the functionality of the immune system.
  • A proper diet – The biggest aspect here as concerns the care of someone’s health is the type and quality of food that they eat. The immune system will function largely dependent on the food that the body is fed on. It is therefore, very valuable to eat food that is balanced. People tend to feed on junk food, which causes more harm than good when it comes to an individual’s health. One must have a diet that contains a lot of fruits, such as oranges and others that contain citrus, carrots, which are instrumental in the fight against cancer, garlic which helps the immune system to fight off the infections, bacteria rich cultures, oysters and Omega 3, which is found in fish.

Building your immune system will ensure that you will fight off any diseases without the need of any medication.

The Symptoms of Lactose Intolerance

Posted in Healthy Diet on December 6th, 2011 by Body Health – Be the first to comment

Lactose intolerance, commonly known as lactase deficiency, means that your body is unable to digest lactose – a type of sugar found in dairy products and milk. Lactose intolerance results from a deficiency of lactase enzyme produced in the small intestines lining. Although, quite a considerable number of people have low levels of lactase, only a few of them experience the symptoms of this deficiency. Controlling these symptoms is possible by taking diets with limited dairy products.

Symptoms of lactose intolerance

MilkLactose intolerance symptoms can be severer or mild depending on the amount of lactase intake. These symptoms appear within 30 minutes to 2 hours after you taken milk or related products. If you have lactase deficiency, you will experience the following symptoms and signs

Primary symptoms include:

  • Abdominal pain and cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Passing gas (flatulence)
  • Abdominal bloating

Secondary or minor symptoms that are less common include:

  • Abdominal bloating
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal distention and rumbling sounds in the abdomen
  • Vomiting

A significant number of people tend to think that they have lactose intolerance once they see these symptoms. Unfortunately, most of these symptoms could be because of other gastrointestinal diseases or problems. Therefore, these symptoms are not really good at telling whether you have lactose intolerance or if you have low levels of lactase enzyme. If you felt sick after taking milk or milk products one time, chances are that you do not have lactase deficiency. Otherwise, if you always feel sick after taking dairy products such as ice cream and cheese chances the probability of you having lactose intolerance are very high.

These signs become common as one becomes older including those who had never had these symptoms before. This means that lactose intolerance is more common in adults than in children. Lactose intolerance symptoms usually start during teen age or adult years and continue throughout one’s life until the small intestines start producing lactase. In very rare cases does lactose intolerance occur in infants? Nonetheless, it still occurs and the symptoms include:

  • Dehydration
  • Slow weight gain
  • Vomiting
  • Diaper rash
  •  Diarrhea
  • Weakness and
  • Irritability

Lactose intolerance symptoms occur due to the unabsorbed lactose. This lactose passes through the small intestines into the colon where a certain normal bacterium that contains lactase splits the lactose into glucose and galactose for its own use. When these bacteria use glucose and galactose they release hydrogen gas. Some of this gas is absorbed into the body and expelled through the lung as one breathes in and out.

However, other bacteria in the colon use up the greatest percentage of this hydrogen gas. A small proportion of the expelled gas is what causes flatulence or passing gas. There are some people that have certain bacteria in the colon, which converts the hydrogen gas into methane gas and release these gases via their breath. You should note that not all lactose is split into glucose and galactose. The lactose that is not split draws water by osmosis into the colon leading to lose stool or diarrhea.

The Dangers of Seafood

Posted in Healthy Diet, Pregnancy on October 16th, 2011 by Body Health – Be the first to comment

Fish MarketSea food is very rich source of protein as well as other nutrients and even low in fat. So it is very good for pregnant women. There are some benefits as well as disadvantages of taking seafood. Some fish will contain high level of mercury called methyl mercury which will harm an unborn child’s developing nervous system in case it is eaten regularly by the pregnant women. Mercury will be released into the environment through industrial pollution and accumulated into the surface of water as well as oceans.

Bacteria which are present in the water will cause some chemical changes in the water which will convert mercury into methyl mercury which proves to be very dangerous. Fish will absorb the methyl mercury from water as they eat aquatic organisms. Almost all fishes contain some amount of methyl mercury which is not very harmful to the human beings. Big fishes are more dangerous for the human beings as they eat small fishes so they will contain large amount of methyl mercury present in it. So, pregnant women can protect their unborn child by not eating these large fishes. Some of the large fishes are shark, swordfish, tilefish etc. Even small children as well as nursing mothers should avoid eating the larger fish. There are varieties of fishes which pregnant women can eat which will prove to be healthy. Depending on the serving size one can eat fish more frequently.

Some of the healthy fishes are canned fish, shellfish or farm–raised fish. In one week you can eat more than 12 ounces of fish and it provides you no harm. One can get all the information regarding whether the fish is sold in your local area by contacting the food safety authority or local health department. Intake of fish is very unsafe for you and your family because there is lot of risk of contamination from mercury in water .The mercury contamination is possible through natural sources or may be through some industrial pollution. Approximately there are 35,000 fish farms in 23 states and it is according to the statistical record.

The most popular seafood product is catfish. Mississippi is the largest producer of the catfish. Majority of the fish which Americans are eating are through man-made aqua farms. Catfish being ugly is also a scavenger. There is inbuilt cycle present in the catfish which will help to clean all the toxins from its body which it will consume from the environment. Mercury proves to be very dangerous toxic metal which can damage the whole nervous system of the small children and even the unborn child .On the other hand elder people will experience headaches, numbness in hands as well as feet, poor concentration power etc.

Through research studies it is suggested that the men is more prone to heart attack if consumed lots of sea food. According to the investigation done by the tribune governments as well as seafood industry are not caring for the public health. Through various industrial processes mercury is released into the air as a bi-product and from there it will accumulate into lakes, oceans etc.
